Not In The Cards PDF Print E-mail

I once heard a comedian express the following commentary about psychic hotlines: "If these psychics are so good then why do they have to ask what your credit card number is? Shouldn't they just know?" It's strange what some people don't question in this world.

In the wake of the September 11 attack on America, there has been a whole lot of questioning and finger pointing going on. The FBI, CIA, immigration department, airport security, past governments, present governments, and even foreign governments have all been targets of blame for not preventing the horrific events of that day. However no one that I know of has stopped to ask why North America's vast network of self proclaimed psychics, gurus, tarot card readers and new age mediums didn't tip everyone off about the coming terror. After all, isn't knowing that if you go to work you will die much more important than knowing if the guy or girl in the accounting department likes you or not?

Charity Begins After Christmas PDF Print E-mail

The return of December marks the season when many will observe Christmas with the trimming of a tree in their living room, the hanging of colourful lights around their homes, and the decorating of their life with the poor.  Let me explain what I mean.

In recent years a local business has contacted me to help them find a family who could use a helping hand at Christmas.  That sounds noble and innocent enough, but I have always steered these festive philanthropists to families in the community because I haven?t wanted to subject our own church attendees to their giving.  We, the church, help them ourselves anyway.

My concern about these holiday helpers is their motives.  Take, for example, one manager with whom I spoke mere hours before they imparted their gifts to the poor family I introduced them to.  This manager was telling me how she was going to go to the family?s home with age, gender, and size relative gifts for the children as well as . . .

A few months ago, our household experienced one of those weeks. After repeated troubleshooting on our 1992 minivan, it became clear that it was a whisker away from blowing a head gasket. Then, determined not to be left out, our 1989 K-Car became a 1989 not-so-OK-Car and threw a crankshaft rod bearing. Thankfully, into this mechanical horror show stepped a dear brother in Christ who not only volunteered to fix our van, but also gave me a rusty beater car he had been doing some patch up work on - a 1977 BMW 320i.

Receiving this gift car has taught me a couple of things, one of which is that no matter how old it is, or what shape it is in, most people think you have money when you drive a BMW. Image wise, I find this somewhat alarming and a little bit entertaining. Some have even compared me to . . .

Say Hello To Nobody PDF Print E-mail

The elders of our church recently had to ask someone to no longer attend Westside Bible Church. This person?s name?  - ?Someone Else.?

Recently too many people at our church have been counting on Someone Else to do the work of some of our ministries that require a team of volunteers.  This is not to say that there aren?t a good number of people at the church carrying out individual ministries and roles, but other programs and needs at the church - such as Sunday school, junior church, junior and senior high youth groups, church cleaning and more - require a team of people to make them truly successful.  When increasing numbers of church members and attendees depend on Someone Else to do these ministries, the toll is a gradual drain of discouragement on those who have agreed to lead them.

Phew (fyoo ) ? an interjection used to express fatigue, surprise, disgust or relief.  For example:

  • ?Phew, I am so tired I have just got to sit down!?
  • ?Phew!  When that tire blew it scared the daylights out of me.?
  • ?Phew . . . . you are so stupid!?
  • ?No residual thyroid tissue.  Radioactive treatment was successful.  Phew.?
