"And himself believed, and his whole house." John 4:53

Too many people take the mercies of the LORD for granted. Like the ten lepers in the parable, many will cry out to the LORD for help, and when help is given them, they will go their way, as nine lepers did, and not return to give thanks. Not so with this nobleman. He became a believer in the LORD Jesus, and his whole family believed. He told them the words which the LORD had spoken, and faith was kindled in the hearts of the whole

"Blessed are they that hear the Word of God and keep it." Luke 11:28

The church has been charged by her LORD to preach the Gospel to every creature, and all mankind should hear the Word of the LORD. David sings: "So will I compass Thine altar, O LORD, that I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving and tell of all Thy wondrous works. LORD, I have loved the habitation of Thy house and the place where Thine honor dwelleth."

Our spiritual life must always be nourished and

"I have learned, in whatever state I am, to be content." Phil. 4:11

What is the secret? How can we be joyful and content in every state of life?  Paul had learned to be content, because he had found the source of strength. "I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me." Christ Jesus is a strong Savior, who endured every trial in His suffering life for us. He was content to go hungry forty days in the wilderness. He was content to do the will of His Father by giving Himself up

"Finally, brethern, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Phil. 4:8

Our human minds are seldom a total blank. They are filled with thoughts about persons, events, and ideas. Often our minds are drawn to thoughts of evil. To help fix  our minds on God and on His gifts, St. Paul outlines a plan of meditation. He lists

 TWELFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

"THIS IS THE DAY THE LORD HATH MADE, LET US REJOICE AND BE GLAD IN IT."

1 Kings 19:9-18 Romans 9:1-5 Matthew 14:22-33 Psalm 106:4-12

The image of a storm can be an appropriate metaphor for our spiritual lives. All kinds of waters threaten to drown us, whether they be illness, disaster, doubt, conflict, or a gnawing sense of anxiety. The forecast of a heavy storm can fill us with worry, for we know risks and dangers lie ahead.

In the midst of

"Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let our requests be made to God. Phil. 4:6

St. Paul says, "Have no anxiety about anything," We may be concerned for the needs of our life. We bear the burden of suffering humanity. But we do not worry about things we cannot change or understand. We give them to God in prayer.

Paul gives a brief formula for our prayer. First, we wait upon God. We do not rush Him. We rely on Him, as a child

"Rejoice in the LORD always; again I say, Rejoice. Let all men know your forbearance. The LORD is at hand." Phil. 4:4,5

JOY in the Christian life becomes a habit, woven into our personality. The believer is sure of God's love in Christ Jesus. He is secure in the forgiveness of God through the work of Jesus. St. Paul reminds us that we can therefore rejoice at all times.

The Bible doesn't say joy is a fruit of curcumstance; it clearly states that joy is a fruit of the Spirit. To

"But our commonwealth is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the LORD Jesus Christ. Phil. 3:20

Paul says we who believe in Christ are citizens of heaven. By Baptism we were born into the kingdom of heaven. We are under the gracious rule of Christ, who suffered and died and now rules as LORD over all.

As citizens of heaven we are more than invaders of earth, taking all we can get for ourselves. We are not refugees, running to escape danger. We are more than tourists, who admire the

For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Phil. 3:18

Many of us have shed tears of sorrow over the death of a friend. Tears of disappointment may fall when we do not get our way. Most of our tears are selfish, caused by personal pain.

Do we ever shed tears because other people have not found the true joy of Christ?  Paul preached Christ crucified and risen again. His joy in Christ was real and personal. He

"I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." Phil. 3:14

The new doors at the entrance of the hospital say,"Caution! This is an automatic door." It is necessary for the older people and handy-i-capped.

There is no automatic door to the prize in the Christian race of life. St. Paul uses the comparison of a race. It was customary to set the prize at the point where the race was to end. The sight of the prize moved the runners to strain every
