"And There Was No Fire, Lightning or Thunder"
2Kings 5:1-14

Saddam Hussein's photo is once again in the news. This time we see pictures of a cleaned up Saddam making his appearance in a court of law. I read that when the pictures of Saddam in court were shown on Iraq T.V., everyone stopped what they were doing and watched in fascination. Oh how the mighty are fallen!

We love to see oversized egos get their comeuppance, and we love the stories of the humble person who succeeds against all odds.

The Strange Case of the Spirit and the Flesh

In 1886 Robert Louis Stevenson wrote The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde.  The story is about a respectable doctor who experiments with the idea that people have both a good and evil self. He hopes to isolate them in hope of ridding himself of his evil side. The experiment is partially successful, but he is unable to rid himself of his evil side, the villainous Mr. Hyde, who in fact grows stronger and stronger finally becoming the dominant personality. It was known as a "shilling shocker", the Victorian equivalent of a Stephen King novel. The story was born in Stevenson's own nightmares in which he dreamed that by day he worked as a respectable doctor but by night roamed the back alleys of Edinburgh. The book was an instant success, read even by Queen Victoria. Stevenson's wife found the manuscript and was so offended by it she burned it in the fireplace. But the story was so burned into his mind that Stevenson quickly rewrote it in a matter of days

Suddenly he is plunged into a struggle between good and evil and finds himself at the center of this struggle against the evil and once defeated Lord Voldemort, whose talisman is the serpent.

I am going to tell you about a time when Jesus healed a man who could not walk.

Jesus was visiting at the home of his friend, Peter and the house was full of people who had come to see him. They had heard that Jesus could heal the sick, which they had not seen or heard of in a very long time. So many came to see and hear Jesus.

I enjoy "top ten" lists. Whether its "ten deadliest things that bite" or "ten best places to order chili", I just think they are fun and am a sucker for them. I am sure there have been attempts at "modern inventions" top ten list. What inventions have contributed most to making the modern world possible. Sure, I know we are in a post-modern world, but I don't see anyone scrapping anesthetics or the remote control for the T.V. so lets call it the modern world for today.
