1 John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

Nothing in this world is perfect. We strive to be perfect, to be accepted, to win, but things don't always work out the way we plan every time.

Today, the girls' soccer team, which are in first place, went to face a losing team, one that wasn't even in the running to place. Our girls found that, although they are strong players, not easily intimidated, things can change quickly.

The girls they met were a tough team, used to playing against the rules instead of by the rules. Their coach screamed as though she was coaching a man's hockey team. I know you've seen and heard those players before! The girls ran all over our girls, pushed, shoved, and pulled. Our girls played a clean game, but were upset because the referee never called anything on the other team. Our girls are taught to be fair, not to fight, push, or shove on the field; otherwise, they will be red-carded. So, they 'played by the rules', and lost. Oh, the score was only two to one, but it was the only game they have lost this year. And, to lose this game to a losing team hurt somewhat, I am sure.

The girls lost the game, but not their integrity. We often look at defeat as a terrible thing. The world will go to any lengths to get what it wants - lie, cheat, steal. But, when a Christian does the best they can, and still loses, they still have won the victory. It takes a strong person to face defeat without getting upset, and taking revenge. Their faith wasn't shaken; they will be out there playing just as hard next weekend, ready to take on the world! We must, by God's example, overcome the world, or it will overcome us with ruin.
