"Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD." Psalm 33:12

In these words the Psalmist referred only to Israel. They were blessed above all other nations; for they were the only ones who knew the LORD, the Triune God. To Israel, God revealed Himself; to them He gave His Law and testimonies; to them He promised the Messiah, the Redeemer, And for His sake God showered His loving-kindness upon them. But Israel failed to appreciate this goodness, and in course of time they forfeited God's favor. They rejected Jesus Christ as their Messaih. They are no longer the blessed nation.

There is no other nation today that enjoys this blessedness as Israel once did. However, since the Gospel is now being preached in all the world, all nations are being offered the spiritual blessings of our Triune God.

On this National Independence Day we of the United States should remember that what made our country free and great was the blessing of Almighty God. The open Bible, the fruit of the Reformation, became the fountainhead of our national liberties. The Christians of the past have made the largest contribution to the nation's welfare. "If we abide by the principles taught in the Bible, our country will go on prospering; but if we and our posterity neglect its instructions and authority, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury all our glory in profound obscurity."

Christian friends,  Today, recommit yourself to living as one of God's people. That's the way to enjoy true freedom.

Grant wisdom, LORD, and strength to all                                                            Who serve our country's need;                                                                              Forgive our sins, and heal our land                                                                                In Jesus' name we plead.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY - The highways of history are strewn with the wreckage of nations that forgot God.
