The Fourth Word From The Cross

"My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?"
- Matthew 27:46

It was nine o'clock in the morning when the hammers rang out over Calvary. During the first three hours our Savior spoke three times. Then for three hours He hung upon the Cross in silence and darkness.

Suddenly, at noon, the face of the sky became black with thick darkness. The time of our Saviors deepest sorrow had now come. What Jesus suffered there for us and our salvation we cannot tell.

"My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?"

As the hour of three o'clock was nearing, Jesus uttered the tearing cry: "My God, My God, Why hast thou forsaken Me.?" We will never fathom the full meaning of these words. We know that sin separates us from God, and we know that He was bearing the sin of the world. The gnawing pain of hell is in this that God isn't there. For 33 years He had an unbroken communion with God His Father. But now there was no one to whom He could turn. Even God had forsaken Him. He endured hell that we may inherit heaven.

Forsaken and alone, Christ died,
He bore the pain for you and me;
It was in this, His darkest hour,
He showed His love for all to see.

PRAY - With all our hearts we thank You, our Dear Savior, for restoring us to sweet fellowship with God through Your holy sacrifice and Your suffering of everything which might have separated us from the blessedness of heaven. Amen.
