The Fifth Word From The Cross

"I THIRST"
- John 19:28

Crucifixion is so horrible a mode of death that it has been put aside by the common pity of mankind. The weight of the body hanging on four wounds, the swelling of the arteries, the throbbing of the crushed tendons, the publicity of shame, all that can be ghastly in death our Savior suffered. Now our Savior, suffering the very torments of hell, begged for water to moisten His chapped lips and dried throat. "I thirst," the Savior cried, showing that He is clothed with our feelings. Only a sponge with vinegar was pressed to His lips. These words portrayed His sorrow and suffering, both physical and spiritual. No suffering can come to us which He has not suffered, yet without sin. He has deep feeling for us when life brings hurts and scars. His life is woven into ours who take Him as our LORD and Savior.

Was it for crimes that I have done

Amazing pity, grace unknown
And love beyond degree!

Pray - O Jesus, help us to control our desires. May a thirst for knowing You and longing to please You become our strongest passion. Amen
