What a man thinks about is important, for his character gradually takes on the hue of his personal reflections and meditations. This text says, "For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he" Prov. 23:7. An evil idea once fixed in the mind is almost impossible to eradicate, and it may surface without warning at any moment through some unplanned incident or suggestive reminder. If we are controlled by sordid and ungodly thoughts, our character will slowly but surely become warped.

Christian friends, when sinful ideas suddenly pop into your head, refuse to concentrate on them. Take a positive approach. Repeat aloud a Bible verse, sing your favorite hymn, or offer a prayer. Then, with God's help you will slowly but surely bring into captivity "every thought to the obedience of Christ."
 
Search me, O God, my heart discern,
Try me, my inmost thoughts to learn;
And help me, lest to sin I stray,
To guard my mind throughout this day.
