"The LORD is my Shepherd"
- Psalm 23

This 23rd Psalm is not only the best known of all the psalms, but also for many the best-liked passage in all the sacred Scriptures. What a pity that many who would take comfort from this Psalm do not know the Good Shepherd. Who is this Shepherd whom David sings? He is none other than the LORD of whom He again speaks in the 110th Psalm; and Jesus declares that David was speaking of Him--Matthew 22:41-45. With this psalm in mind, Jesus solemnly asserts: "I am the Good Shepherd" John 10:14. Only they who believe in Jesus Christ as LORD and as the Shepherd and Bishop of their souls -1 Peter 2:25, can share the divine confidence of the Psalmist.

This I share from a friend--

The LORD is my shepherd--  assurance
I shall not want-- contentment
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures -- peace
He leadeth me beside still waters-- life
He restoreth my soul--divine guidance
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for . . .

He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake-- courage and confidence
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil-- companionship
For Thou art with me-- comfort
Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me-- providence
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies--kindness
Thou anointest my head with oil-- happiness
My cup runneth over-- abiding mercy
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life-- eternal bliss
I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Christian friends-sometimes our Guide seems too slow for us and indeed seems to lead us by devious paths, but it pays us far better to take the detours with Him, than to take the shortcuts without Him.

There are times, when tired of the toilsome road
That for ways of the world I pine
But He draws me back to the upward track
By the touch of His hand on mine.
