"Speak not evil one to another, brethren."
- James 4:11

We live in a time when everyone wants to know the dirt about others. Books that promise to tell all about some prominent individual are best sellers. Watch the news stands to catch the weekly tabloids that carry striking headlines about some newly discovered affair. Political leaders are the primary subjects of these sensational claims. Listening to gossip shouldn't be entertaining, because love never rejoices in iniquity. Furthermore, a believer doesn't need to know the attitude of people in general to determine principles of proper conduct. Making ourselves feel good by dragging other down should be repugnant to the child of God.

Let's check every impulse to spread a rumor. Let's refuse to buy magazines or watch programs that feature scandalous stories. So "speak not evil one to another, brethren."

Forget the slander you have heard,
Forget the hasty, unkind word;
Forget the storm of yesterday,
Forgetting is the only way.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:  If gossip is allowed to monopolize your ear, it is sure to motivate your tongue.
